CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Oh, So That’s Why They Don’t Kiss!

ERIN DIDN’T even have words to explain how much she appreciated everything Hugo had done for her, her children, and especially, Kevin. It was like he was this magical force that could come into their glum, depressing house and make it light up with twinkle lights, bringing hope to everyone. They all smiled more, and even the sound of laughter could be heard again.

After Hugo helped Erin get over her fear of marijuana and she was able to smoke from the pink elephant on her own—it had been terrifying to smoke alone the first time—she was able to come outside of herself and her pain. Less pain made her even more aware of what was happening with everyone in her family, and they were all learning to adapt.

Hugo still drove her to radiation each day. Rather than heading back to Edina right away, he would stop by his apartment in his vibrant neighborhood and pick up Lulu so he could stay with Erin longer. Sometimes they’d make a stop to pick up groceries or to share one of their favorite obscure shops where she’d buy expensive soap or hand lotion. Then she’d come home and smoke. She wished he’d smoke with her. Each day, she offered, but she always got the same response.

The more potent marijuana made her feel wasted the first few times, but eventually the effect eased. Once she was used to it, the new variety made her feel less drowsy and actually seemed to give her some energy. She started smoking more regularly after that, and when she felt guilty, Hugo would tell her not to worry. He’d take care of things until the kids got home, slowly working his way through her old honey-do list or starting some elaborate dinner that made the entire house smell amazing as it cooked in the oven. Somehow, Hugo was always able to help her manage to have her feet back on the ground by the time the kids walked in from the bus.

As soon as he was back in the kids’ lives, they talked more, listened better, and even their bickering had lessened. The sibling rivalry had really picked up in August when Erin’s headaches were getting unmanageable, and that was one of the main reasons she’d reached out and asked Kevin for more help. The kids still had their moments, but they were few and far between now. Brooke wasn’t hiding up in her room alone with her nose in a book or spending all her time texting her friends. Finn was no longer throwing fits or arguing over anything he could just so he could get attention.

Instead, Hugo engaged the children mentally and physically, and they seemed happier than they’d been before everything went to hell with her and Kevin’s marriage. Hugo somehow could be gentle with them while still demanding a great deal, expecting them to follow through on requests without whining. Hugo was great with her children, and with each passing day, she saw these were relationships she wanted to help foster and support.
